RESUMO

Collection and cooking of wild vegetables have provided seasonal enjoyments for Japanese local people as provisioning and cultural ecosystem services. However, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011 caused extensive radiocesium contamination of wild vegetables. Restrictions on commercial shipments of wild vegetables have been in place for the last 10 years. Some species, including buds of Aralia elata, are currently showing radiocesium concentrations both above and below the Japanese reference level for food (100 Bq/kg), implying that there are factors decreasing and increasing the 137Cs concentration. Here, we evaluated easy-to-measure environmental variables (dose rate at the soil surface, organic soil layer thickness, slope steepness, and presence/absence of decontamination practices) and the 137Cs concentrations of 40 A. elata buds at 38 locations in Fukushima Prefecture to provide helpful information on avoiding collecting highly contaminated buds. The 137Cs concentrations in A. elata buds ranged from 1 to 6,280 Bq/kg fresh weight and increased significantly with increases in the dose rate at the soil surface (0.10-6.50 µSv/h). Meanwhile, the 137Cs concentration in A. elata buds were not reduced by decontamination practices. These findings suggest that measuring the latest dose rate at the soil surface at the base of A. elata plants is a helpful way to avoid collecting buds with higher 137Cs concentrations and aid in the management of species in polluted regions.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The effects of hydrocortisone (HDC) administration to extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants on later development remain unclear. This study examined the association between HDC dosage during neonatal period and neurodevelopmental outcomes in ELBW infants. METHODS: This study was a retrospective cohort study conducted in eight centers in Japan. The subjects of this study were ELBW infants born between April 2015 and March 2017. The association between postnatal total HDC dosage up to 36 weeks postmenstrual age and the developmental quotient (DQ) at 3 years of age was examined. Multiple linear regression evaluated the association, adjusting for weeks of gestation, birth weight, and the presence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, late-onset circulatory collapse, intracranial hemorrhage, necrotizing enterocolitis, and sepsis. RESULTS: This study included 218 ELBW infants, of whom 144 underwent a developmental test at 3 years of age. Simple linear regression analysis revealed a significant association between total HDC dosage and DQ at 3 years of age (coefficients: -2.65, 95% CI: -3.73, -1.57). Multiple linear regression analysis adjusted for the presence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and late-onset circulatory collapse also revealed a significant association between total HDC dosage and DQ at 3 years of age (coefficients: -2.66, 95% CI: -3.89, -1.42). CONCLUSION: Higher total HDC dosage up to 36 weeks postmenstrual age in ELBW infants was associated with impaired neurodevelopmental outcomes. Although HDC is often needed in the treatment of ELBW infants, clinicians should be aware that an increased dose of HDC may be associated with impaired neurodevelopmental outcomes.

RESUMO

In the context of elevated concerns related to nuclear accidents and warfare, the lessons learnt from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in 2011 are important. In particular, Japanese authorities implemented an ambitious decontamination program to reduce the air dose rate in order to facilitate the return of the local inhabitants to previously evacuated areas. This approach contrasts the strategy adopted in Chernobyl, where the most contaminated areas remain off limits. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of the Japanese decontamination strategy on the dispersion of radioactive contaminant fluxes across mountainous landscapes exposed to typhoons has not been quantified. Based on the unique combination of river monitoring and modeling in a catchment representative of the most impacted area in Japan, we demonstrate that decontamination of 16% of the catchment area resulted in a decrease of 17% of sediment-bound radioactive fluxes in rivers. Decontamination operations were therefore relatively effective, although they could only be conducted in a small part of the area due to the dominance of steep forested slopes. In fact, 67% of the initial radiocesium contamination was calculated to remain stored in forested landscapes, which may contribute to future downstream radiocesium dispersion during erosive events. Given that only a limited proportion of the initial population had returned in 2019 (~30%), it raises the question as to whether decontaminating a small percentage of the contaminated area was worth the effort, the price, and the amount of waste generated?

RESUMO

In this study, the effect of temperature, water quality, and the impact of an intense typhoon event on change in 137Cs concentration in the water of agricultural and forested rivers near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (Japan) was evaluated using monthly stationary observations obtained under baseflow conditions 2.8-10.6 years after the nuclear accident in 2011. The dissolved 137Cs concentration fluctuated seasonally with water temperature in all rivers, and the increase in dissolved 137Cs concentration for unit increase in temperature was higher in forested rivers than in agricultural rivers. The relationship between water temperature and the apparent distribution coefficient of 137Cs well followed the van 't Hoff equation in the two agricultural rivers, where the enthalpy of reaction was estimated as -15.6 and -19.6 kJ mol-1. The van 't Hoff equation was not well followed for a forested river, where the suspended solids mainly comprised organic matter, suggesting that the dominant process determining dissolved 137Cs concentrations in forested rivers is not only water temperature effect on ion exchange, but rather the input of 137Cs and K+ (competing with 137Cs for exchange sites on mineral particles) into the water phase via litter leaching. Suspended solids concentrations in agricultural rivers correlated negatively with 137Cs concentrations in suspended solids, suggesting an increased proportion of coarse particles or the input of soils with low 137Cs concentration from decontaminated agricultural land. At some sites, 137Cs concentrations in dissolved form and in suspended solids were reduced sharply in association with the passage of Typhoon Hagibis in October 2019, suggesting that Typhoon Hagibis caused large-scale surface erosion that removed the source of 137Cs.

RESUMO

The aggregated transfer factor (Tag) is commonly used to represent the actual transfer of radiocesium from soil to wild edible plants, but the values have shown substantial variation since the Fukushima nuclear accident. To elucidate the factors causing this variation, we investigated the effects of spatial scale and vertical 137Cs distribution in the soil on the variation of Tag-137Cs values for one of the most severely contaminated wild edible plants, Eleutherococcus sciadophylloides Franch. et Sav. (Koshiabura). The variation in Tag-137Cs values was not reduced by direct measurement of 137Cs deposition in soil samples from the Koshiabura habitat, as a substitute for using spatially averaged airborne survey data at the administrative district scale. The 137Cs activity concentration in Koshiabura buds showed a significant positive correlation with the 137Cs inventories only in the organic horizon of soil from the Koshiabura habitat. The ratio of 137Cs inventories in the organic horizon to the total 137Cs deposition in soil exhibited substantial variation, especially in broad-leaved deciduous forests that Koshiabura primarily inhabits. This variation may be the cause of the wide range of Tag-137Cs values observed in Koshiabura buds when calculated from the total 137Cs deposition in soil.

RESUMO

Background: Pulmonary sarcoidosis predominantly affects the upper lung zones but sometimes affects the lower lung zones. We hypothesised that patients with lower lung zone-dominant sarcoidosis had lower baseline forced vital capacity, progressive restrictive lung function decline, and higher long-term mortality. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed clinical data including the pulmonary function tests of 108 consecutive patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis pathologically confirmed by lung and/or mediastinal lymph node biopsy from 2004 to 2014 from our database. Results: Eleven patients (10.2%) with lower lung zone-dominant sarcoidosis were compared with 97 patients with nonlower lung zone-dominant sarcoidosis. The median age of the patients with lower dominance was significantly older (71 vs. 56, p = 0.0005). The patient with lower dominance had a significantly lower baseline percent forced vital capacity (FVC) (96.0% vs. 103%, p = 0.022). The annual change in FVC was -112 mL in those with lower dominance vs. 0 mL in nonlower dominance (p = 0.0033). Fatal acute deterioration was observed in three patients (27%) in the lower dominant group. Overall survival in the lower dominant group was significantly worse. Conclusions: Patients with lower lung zone-dominant sarcoidosis had an older age and lower baseline FVC with disease progression and acute deterioration associated with higher long-term mortality.

RESUMO

Radiocesium (137Cs) contamination of the freshwater ecosystems adjacent to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) in Japan has persisted long after the accident that occurred at the facility in March 2011. It is necessary to elucidate the dynamics of 137Cs in various aquatic ecosystems to predict 137Cs concentrations in fish and manage freshwater fisheries in the vicinity of FDNPP. To these ends, we applied stable isotope analysis to evaluate changes in 137Cs levels through trophic positions and the relative importance of the 137Cs sources at the trophic bases of two rivers and two lakes in Fukushima. The δ15N analyses disclosed that 137Cs decreases from primary producers to fish consumers in the river food web and 137Cs increases among fish consumers with increasing trophic position in the lake food web. The δ13C analysis revealed that autochthonous 137Cs contributed to fish contamination. The periphyton-dependent and zooplankton-dependent fish had comparatively higher 137Cs concentrations in the rivers and lakes, respectively. Cesium-137 supply from the pelagic food web was observed to contribute to greater 137Cs levels in the fish consumers inhabiting the lakes. The results of this study show that stable isotope analysis may help clarify 137Cs dynamics in freshwater food webs and identify the important 137Cs sources in the food web. Identifying important 137Cs sources and trophic transfers depending on the ecosystem help guide regulatory and management frameworks to establish profitability of the food fish stocks there and maintain food security.

RESUMO

The nuclear power plant accident in Fukushima had led to pollution of forest ecosystems with 137Cs in 2011. In this study, we simulated the spatiotemporal distribution of 137Cs concentrations of litter layer in the contaminated forest ecosystems in two decades from 2011, which is one of the key environmental components of 137Cs migration in the environment due to the high bioavailability of 137Cs in the litter. Our simulations showed that 137Cs deposition is the most important factor in the degree of contamination of the litter layer but vegetation type (evergreen coniferous/deciduous broadleaf) and mean annual temperature are also important for changes over time. Deciduous broadleaf trees had higher initial concentrations in the litter layer due to the direct initial deposition on the forest floor. However, the concentrations remained higher than those in evergreen conifers after 10 years due to redistribution of 137Cs by vegetation. Moreover, areas with lower average annual temperatures and lower litter decomposition activity retained higher 137Cs concentrations in the litter layer. The results of the spatiotemporal distribution estimation of the radioecological model suggest that, in addition to 137Cs deposition, elevation and vegetation distribution should also be considered in the long-term management of contaminated watersheds, which can be informative in identifying hotspots of 137Cs contamination on a long-term scale.

RESUMO

Understanding the seasonality of 137Cs concentrations in aquatic animals is crucial for reviving local inland fisheries. The seasonality of 137Cs concentrations in animals is expected to vary, even if focal species consume similarly contaminated foods because the 137Cs excretion rate is species-specific, and 137Cs uptake by foraging autochthonous food resources also vary among seasons. Here, we conducted a seasonal monitoring survey of dissolved 137Cs concentrations as an indicator of the contamination level of food resources and measured 137Cs concentrations in two carnivorous aquatic animals (Palaemon paucidens and Rhinogobius sp.) that share a trophic niche in a stream connected to a dam reservoir. The dissolved 137Cs concentration had clear seasonality-high in summer and low in winter. The 137Cs concentrations in the animals revealed a different seasonal pattern-it peaked in October in P. paucidens and peaked in February in Rhinogobius. Overall, the 137Cs concentration was relatively higher in P. paucidens than in Rhinogobius, suggesting that P. paucidens has a lower excretion rate than Rhinogobius. Consequently, the seasonality of the 137Cs concentration in P. paucidens showed temporal changes similar to those of the dissolved 137Cs concentration, which were likely affected by 137Cs uptake through foraging, whereas that in Rhinogobius was controlled by 137Cs excretion. This study shows that the seasonality of 137Cs concentration can differ between sympatric animals that share a trophic niche. Accumulating knowledge and comparing the seasonality of 137Cs concentrations in fisheries species based on the balance between uptake and excretion will be valuable to determine the appropriate seasons to obtain less-contaminated products.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The incidence of pulmonary hypertension (PH) associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) has not been investigated in regional cohorts. The aim of this study was to clarify the incidence of PH associated with BPD in all very low birthweight infants (VLBWIs) born during the study period in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational cohort study of all VLBWIs born in Aichi Prefecture. The inclusion criteria were VLB, birth between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2015, and admission to any neonatal intensive care unit in Aichi Prefecture. BPD28d and BPD36w were defined as the need for supplemental oxygen or any respiratory support at 28 days of age or 36 weeks of postmenstrual age (PMA). The primary outcome was the incidence of PH after 36 weeks' PMA (PH36w) in VLBWIs with BPD28d and BPD36w. The secondary outcomes were the clinical factors related to PH36w in BPD36w patients. Mann-Whitney U-test and Fisher's exact test were used for univariate analysis. Differences were considered statistically significant at P < 0.05. Risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were also evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 441 patients were analyzed. A total of 217 and 131 patients met the definition of BPD28d and BPD36w, respectively. Nine patients were diagnosed with PH36w (4.2% and 6.9% of the BPD28d and BPD36w patients, respectively). The presence of oligohydramnios (RR, 2.71; 95% CI: 1.55-4.73, P = 0.014) and sepsis (RR, 3.62; 95% CI: 1.51-8.63, P = 0.025) was significant in the PH36w patients. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of PH36w was 4.2% and 6.9% in the BPD28d and BPD36w patients, respectively. Oligohydramnios and sepsis were significantly associated with PH36w in VLBWIs.

RESUMO

In forest ecosystems, understanding the relationship between the vertical distribution of fine roots and residual soil nitrogen is essential for clarifying the diversity-productivity-water purification relationship. Vertical distributions of fine-root biomass (FRB) and concentrations of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3 -N) in soil water were investigated in a conifer plantation with three thinning intensities (Control, Weak and Intensive), in which hardwood abundance and diversity were low, moderate and high, respectively. Intensive thinning led to the lowest NO3 -N concentration in soil water at all depths (0-100 cm) and highest FRB at shallow depths (0-50 cm). The NO3 -N concentration at a given depth was negatively correlated with total FRB from the surface to the depth at which NO3 -N concentration was measured, especially at shallow depths, indicating that more abundant fine roots led to lower levels of downward NO3 -N leaching. FRB contributed positively to nitrogen content of hardwood leaves. These findings demonstrate that a hardwood mixture in conifer plantations resulted in sufficient uptake of NO3 -N from soil by well developed fine-root systems, and translocation to canopy foliage. This study suggests that productivity and water purification can be achieved through a hardwood mixture in conifer plantations.

RESUMO

After the Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in Japan, freshwater ecosystems near the site remained contaminated by radiocesium (RCs). Clarifying RCs concentrations in aquatic insects is crucial because fishes consume these insects that transfer RCs into freshwater ecosystems. As aquatic insects are usually measured for radioactivity in bulk samples of several tens of insects, variation in RCs concentration among individuals is not captured. In this study, we investigated the variability in 137Cs activity concentration in individual aquatic insects in detritivorous caddisfly (Stenopsyche marmorata) and carnivorous dobsonfly (Protohermes grandis) larvae from the Ota River, Fukushima. Caddisfly larvae showed sporadically higher radioactivity in 4 of the 46 caddisfly larvae, whereas no such outliers were observed in 45 dobsonfly larvae. Autoradiography and scanning electron microscopy analyses confirmed that these caddisfly larvae samples contained radiocesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs), which are insoluble Cs-bearing silicate glass particles. CsMPs were also found in potential food sources of caddisfly larvae, such as periphyton and drifting particulate organic matter, indicating that larvae may ingest CsMPs along with food particles of similar size. Although CsMP distribution and uptake by organisms in freshwater ecosystems is relatively unknown, our study demonstrates that CsMPs can be taken up by aquatic insects.

RESUMO

We obtained the aggregated transfer factor (Tag) for 10 common edible wild plant species (four perennial spermatophytes, bamboo shoot, two tree species, and three perennial pteridophytes) in northeastern Japan. Measurement of Tag was carried out in 2012-2019 and we also used publicly available data for 2012-2019: food monitoring data and total deposition data from an airborne survey. The Tag obtained from actual measurements agreed well with Tag values calculated from the publicly available data. The sampling locations were only identified at the municipal level and uncertainty of the deposition for the publicly available data, and thus Tag values showed substantial variation. The Tag of the perennial spermatophytes, including bamboo shoot, and perennial pteridophytes showed single exponential decline with effective half-lives of approximately 2 years, whereas those of tree species did not show distinct temporal change. These results imply that data since 2014 are applicable for Tag estimation for long-term potential ingestion dose in the future to the public because of the slow decline. The calculated Tag values of all species for 2014-2019 ranged from 6.1 × 10-5 to 5.2 × 10-3 m2/kg-fresh mass. The maximum Tag value was observed for the tree koshiabura (Chengiopanax sciadophylloides) and the minimum value was observed for the perennial spermatophyte giant butterbur (Petasites japonica). Tree species showed higher Tag than spermatophyte and pteridophyte perennials.

RESUMO

Reservoir sediments generally act as a sink for radionuclides derived from nuclear accidents, but under anaerobic conditions, several radionuclides remobilise in bioavailable form from sediments to water columns, which may contribute to the long-term contamination of aquatic products. This study systematically investigated the 137Cs activities of sediment-pore water, providing a direct evidence of the remobilisation of bioavailable 137Cs from sediments in two highly contaminated reservoirs affected by the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. We observed that the dissolved 137Cs activity concentration of pore water (3.0-65.8 Bq L-1) was one to two orders of magnitude higher than that of reservoir water. Moreover, the distribution coefficient (Kd) values for the 137Cs of sediment-pore water (2.6-14 × 103 L kg-1) decreased with depth. The Kd values were significantly and negatively correlated with the concentration of the major 137Cs competing cation NH4+. Our results strongly indicate a competitive ion exchange process between 137Cs and NH4+ via a highly selective interaction with the frayed edge sites of phyllosilicate minerals, which is the major reason for the variability of Kd values of sediment-pore water, even in the Fukushima case. Additionally, the sediment accumulation rates were relatively high, and the annual depositional rate of exchangeable 137Cs prevailed over the annual diffusive flux of 137Cs from the sediment to the overlying water. This finding indicates that even after 10 years since the FDNPP accident, the bioavailable 137Cs is still continuously supplied from the catchment covered by mountainous forests, and reservoir sediments are a long-term important source of bioavailable 137Cs in the riverine system. Our findings provide important parameter values for mid- and long-term assessments of the radiation impact of radionuclide discharges to freshwater environments.

RESUMO

Background: Hemosiderin-laden macrophages (HLMs) have been identified in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). This retrospective study examined the ability of HLMs in BALF to predict the acute exacerbation (AE) of chronic idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIPs). Methods: Two hundred and twenty-one patients with IIP diagnosed by bronchoscopy were enrolled in the study (IPF, n = 87; IIPs other than IPF, n = 134). Giemsa stain was used to detect HLMs in BALF specimens. Prussian blue stain was used to quantify HLMs in BALF, and a hemosiderin score (HS) was given to the specimens containing HLMs. Results: Twenty-four patients had a positive HS (range: 7‒132). The receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis identified the cutoff HS value for predicting the AE of IIPs to be 61.5. Seven cases had a higher HS (≥61.5) and 214 had a lower HS. AE occurred significantly earlier in the higher HS group (4/7 cases) than in the lower HS group (41/214 cases) during a median observation period of 1239 days (log-rank test, p = 0.026). Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis showed that a higher HS was a significant predictor of AE in addition to IPF, percent predicted forced vital capacity, and modified Medical Research Council score. The C-statistics for the prediction of AE did not significantly improve by all the above parameters with HS as compared without HS. Conclusions: A higher HS was a significant predictor of AE in IIPs but did not significantly improve the predictive ability of other parameters.

RESUMO

Forests cover approximately 70% of the area contaminated by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in 2011. Following this severe contamination event, radiocaesium (137Cs) is anticipated to circulate within these forest ecosystems for several decades. Since the accident, a number of models have been constructed to evaluate the past and future dynamics of 137Cs in these forests. To explore the performance and uncertainties of these models we conducted a model inter-comparison exercise using Fukushima data. The main scenario addressed an evergreen needleleaf forest (cedar/cypress), which is the most common and commercially important forest type in Japan. We also tested the models with two forest management scenarios (decontamination by removal of soil surface litter and forest regeneration) and, furthermore, a deciduous broadleaf forest (konara oak) scenario as a preliminary modelling study of this type of forest. After appropriate calibration, the models reproduced the observed data reliably and the ranges of calculated trajectories were narrow in the early phase after the fallout. Successful model performances in the early phase were probably attributable to the availability of comprehensive data characterizing radiocaesium partitioning in the early phase. However, the envelope of the calculated model end points enlarged in long-term simulations over 50 years after the fallout. It is essential to continue repetitive verification/validation processes using decadal data for various forest types to improve the models and to update the forecasting capacity of the models.

RESUMO

Premature infants are at risk for developing symptomatic postnatal cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease, including sepsis-like syndrome. We performed a retrospective case-control study including infants born before 32 weeks of gestation and diagnosed with symptomatic postnatal CMV infection during the neonatal period. Neurodevelopmental outcome was evaluated using the Kyoto Scale of Psychological Development 2001 at 18 months of corrected age and at 3 years of age. Twenty-four infants were diagnosed with postnatal CMV infection; of them, 14 had sepsis-like symptoms and 10 had laboratory test abnormalities only. Home oxygen therapy was used significantly higher in the CMV-positive group compared with the control group at hospital discharge (52% vs 21%, P=0.032). The incidence of neurodevelopmental impairment was not significantly different between the two groups at 18 months of corrected age (29% vs 17%, P=0.48) and at 3 years of age (43% vs 29%, P=0.34). Postnatal CMV infection did not have a significant influence on neurodevelopmental outcomes of symptomatic preterm infants, although those in the CMV-positive group appeared worse.
